About Dexters

Dexter cattle originated in Ireland, developed from the Kerry breed. The registries for this unique breed are the Purebred Dexter Cattle Association of North America (PDCA) and the American Dexter Cattle Association (ADCA). They are small cattle, the average hip height being only 4 feet, and they come in black, red, dun, and red dun, with an occasional white marking on each. Calves often start out red dun, but most are black by a year old. Dexters are usually horned and most people leave the horns on; however, when handling the occasionally flighty animal the horns become dangerous, so some people de-horn them as calves. Most Dexters are very docile, and there are many stories and pictures of “ridable” Dexters; Dexter oxen are not uncommon, either. The average cow produces more milk per pound of body weight than any other breed, and is a great family milk cow.

Dexter meat is very tender and comes in smaller portions, and is sometimes called a “Senior Citizens’ Cut.”  Their feed conversion rate is better than most breeds – one pound body weight to five pounds of sweet feed – and the carcasses usually grade out better than the live animals look. Calm steers gain more weight and have more tender meat than the wilder ones.

We have ten Dexters, which includes six cows and heifers, two bulls, and two steers.

If you are interested in buying a calf, please e-mail; we will let you know when we have one available. Below we have listed our five breeding animals.
